Why is spaying & neutering important?

Fix’em KC is a volunteer-run 501c3 charity that serves the Kansas City Metropolitan area including the counties of Jackson, Clay, Platte, and Cass in Missouri, and Johnson, Wyandotte, Leavenworth, and Miami in Kansas.

There are too many unwanted pets and spaying/neutering is the #1 way to decrease pet homelessness.
More than 2.7 million cats and dogs are killed in shelters annually, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Many people are unaware of this tragic statistic. Here are the numbers:

~ 6.5 million animals are taken into US shelters each year.
~ Out of these, 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.
~ Around 50% of the shelter animals are adopted, but 20–30% get euthanized.
~ 87% of animals in underserved communities are neither spayed nor neutered.
~ 77% of that 87% have never been to a vet.

One female dog may give birth to 12–18 puppies per year. This can result in 67,000 puppies being born from a single female dog and her offspring in six years. (Source: Humane Society)

One female cat can have 20–27 kittens per year. Street cats in the US are estimated to top 30–40 million. (Source: Cat Cave Co)

Also, by fixing your pet, you may avoid veterinary ailments like mammary tumors, uterine infection and testicular cancer. Fixed pets are also far less likely to stray from home and get hit by cars.

Fix’em KC’s mission is to reduce Kansas City’s homeless animal population by subsidizing spay/neuter surgery for pet parents who cannot afford the cost of surgery, and assisting community cat caretakers and trappers with the costs of spay/neuter for trap, neuter-spay and return (TNR).

It takes a village!

Reducing pet homelessness takes everyone working together! Pet owners must be willing to spay and neuter their pets, and veterinary providers need to offer low-cost spay/neuter services. Generous donors can help the whole process move along by bridging the financial gap for families who may not be able to afford the entire spay/neuter fee on their own. By working together, we can prevent thousands of unwanted litters and alleviate so much suffering in the future.

Want to help?

Please help by speaking with friends and family about the importance of spaying and neutering to reduce pet homelessness and suffering. Many people also don’t know that pets can avoid very serious, painful and expensive ailments by being spayed and neutered as well! Uterine infections (Pyometra), mammary tumors and testicular cancer are just a few of these conditions.

You can also help by making a tax-deductible donation to our charity to help pay for surgeries. Our team is volunteer-only so your dollars will only be used to fix pets. Please hit the donate button at the top right of our home page to make your gift.
